But suppose you have two players of equally poor system mastery. Now, some may argue that this isn't as much of an issue as it's made out to be because it's in the ST's power to create encounters that don't require players to build for 2/7 filter paranoia combat. This connects to everything else about the combat mechanics of the game, because managing the mote economy of your attacks and defenses so that your opponent runs dry before you do is the bread and butter of the system, and any player that isn't interested or able to keep track of all of their options will rapidly find themselves having issues with that mote economy. And when they run out of motes to sustain those perfect defenses, they tend to die in short order. Instead, characters are kept alive with Perfect Defenses, charms that let them block, parry, or soak any incoming attack.

in a system where there's serious danger of being one-shotted by a capable opponent even if you maxed out your Ox Body repurchases. The most glaring example is Ox Body Technique, a charm that can be purchased multiple times in order to add more health levels. There's a lot of choices a player can make that seem reasonable - and that the book outright encourages! - that nonetheless are sufficiently suboptimal as to leave a character unprepared to actually excel in the niche a player intended them to perform well in. Fundamentally, Exalted 2e is a system that requires the entire group to be more or less on the same page with system mastery, and at a reasonably high degree of confidence at that.
